Description/Job Summary

The Director of Practice Innovation leads the Practice Innovation function in developing and implementing global, local and practice-specific transformation while streamlining and innovating the practice of law, leveraging business cases review, process analysis, identifying, prototyping, and implementing technology.  A key focus of this position will include adoption, communication and marketing of the Firm’s capabilities and resources.  The Director will be well-versed in legal operations with a demonstrated track record of creating and delivering innovative solutions.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Under the supervision of the Chief Knowledge & Innovation Officer, collaborate with lawyers, Knowledge and IT staff, and Firm clients to understand how process improvement and technology can enhance efficiencies as well as the overall experience and services the Firm delivers
  • Work with the Knowledge Department leadership team to develop, implement and promote a global Practice Innovation strategy and prioritize initiatives
  • Identify opportunities to leverage existing and emerging technologies and processes that could help the various practice groups
  • Work with IT on adoption and change management related to key projects and transformations, and monitor and drive adoption by the lawyers
  • Lead journey maps, pilots, evaluations, product selections, management of process, and technology rollouts
  • Stay informed on technology trends and start-ups that may improve or impact the delivery of legal services and the markets of the clients we serve
  • Provide thought leadership and strategic direction related to emerging technologies and industry trends to Firm and practice leadership
  • Form new vendor relationships to create an environment of collaboration related to current and new services coming to market
  • Prepare a Practice Innovation budget annually, work with the Chief Knowledge & Innovation Officer to incorporate it into the overall department budget, and track budgeted to actual performance of the group throughout the year
  • Complete special projects as requested by the Knowledge Department when necessary
  • Lead the Practice Innovation function globally to ensure consistent approaches are taken to the recruitment, career development, training and remuneration of all group members, and to the services the group provides

Required Skills

  • Minimum of five years of experience in Practice Innovation
  • Extensive knowledge of legal documents and legal practices
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams of designers, technologists, business analysts, and legal practitioners
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong customer service and prompt response time to incoming requests
  • Proven track record of excellent project execution, including strong project management and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize and balance competing demands, follow up with all appropriate constituencies, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced professional environment
  • Ability to proactively identify and solve problems, both technical issues and situations involving collaboration with attorneys and non-legal staff/departments
  • Demonstrated good business judgments and analytical skills

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree - required
  • J.D. or equivalent law degree - preferred
