Description/Job Summary

The Director of Data Analytics & Insights leads the Firm’s efforts to turn data and text into insights for the benefit of the Firm and its clients. This includes the use of data mining, statistics, machine learning, natural language processing, deep learning and thoughtful visualization techniques to inform business decisions.

The Director will work with stakeholders and subject matter experts across the Firm to establish data management principles and procedures, design applications that integrate data across systems, build data repositories, define data flows, develop hypotheses and frame research objectives, leverage data analysis and statistical programming platforms, mine text and design language models, create data solutions and standardize enterprise reporting platforms.


  • Work with the Firm’s practice group leaders and knowledge management teams to identify business opportunities to use data to drive strategic decision making and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Firm’s client representations
  • Build a team of data scientists, data managers, data analysts, and product managers, and partner with vendors and contractors to apply statistics, data mining, machine learning, natural language processing and data visualization techniques and platforms
  • Define business rules and methods for cleansing, aggregating and enhancing data to support analysis, drive reporting and underpin predictive modelling and classification activities
  • Use machine learning and data mining techniques to understand the patterns in large volumes of data, identify relationships, detect data anomalies and classify data
  • Develop predictive and classification models using current and emerging data science methodologies
  • Deploy and operationalize predictive models and integrate findings into business processes
  • Conduct various natural language processing tasks, including topic modeling, custom named entity recognition and extraction, text classification and entity relationships and disambiguation
  • Lead the Firm’s efforts to develop and implement taxonomies and ontologies to model the domains of specific areas of law and to better understand and predict the outcome of matters, phases and tasks
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Firm-wide data visualization and reporting standards
  • Work with the Firm’s business services team, helping to develop enterprise data analytics and business intelligence strategies with practice and functional leads
  • Work with recruiting and professional development teams to include data-driven decision making in the Firm’s recruiting and talent management efforts leaders
  • Design a coherent strategy for the Firm to track, measure and report on its performance in each of its areas of practice, including the efficiency and effectiveness of individual lawyers and practice groups
  • Present complex quantitative analysis tailored to different audiences in a highly consumable and actionable form, including using data storytelling techniques
  • Motivate, inspire, coach and mentor business partners and stakeholders to help them identify or adopt new applications of data analytics
  • Develop concepts for innovative client-facing solutions that could be productized, providing the Firm with a competitive edge
  • Handle projects on request under the direction of the CKIO and other executive staff

Required Experience

  • 8+ years of overall experience; at least 5 years of experience working with senior law firm or corporate leaders on projects-related to data and knowledge management; at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Ability to translate business problems into technical requirements
  • Ability to communicate complex results clearly to a non-technical audience
  • Experience using visualization tools, e.g. MS Power BI, Tableau
  • Familiarity with data management (including master data and data lakes)
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills
  • Project, program and product management experience
  • Proficient with SQL, and familiar with noSQL, Graph databases and their respective benefits to data management and advanced analytics
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, R or Julia
  • Experience with natural language processing; with prior work in libraries such as spaCy, Snorkel, NLTK, and CoreNLP a plus
  • Familiarity with deep learning architectures; experience using TensorFlow, Keras and PyTorch a plus
  • Experience with complex software implementations including design, configuration, integration, rollout, support and training
  • Exposure and experience working in an agile product management and software development environment, with Scrum certification a plus
  • Experience working internationally and with off-shore partners and resources

Required Education

  • A bachelor’s degree required, preferably in mathematics, statistics, computers science, engineering or finance

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics or engineering preferred
  • Law degree preferred but not required
