Description/Job Summary

The Data Architect is responsible for establishing data management principles and processes, informing legal and operational data models, designing and maintaining taxonomies and reference data, structuring data for delivery, and driving the architecture required to support the Firm’s data analytics, knowledge management and innovation efforts. This key role will help ensure the Firm’s core foundational layer of data is consistent, accessible and fit-for-purpose for lawyer, client and business impact.

The Data Architect will collaborate extensively with Firm lawyers, colleagues in the Knowledge Management & Innovation Department, and resources from the Firm’s other functional departments (IT, Finance, HR, etc.). This position will require creative problem solving, analytical rigor and an appreciation for the business and practice of law.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Work with the Firm’s operational leads, practice group leaders and Knowledge Management teams to identify opportunities to leverage data to drive strategic decision making and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Firm’s client representations
  • Produce strategies, plans and roadmaps for master data, reference architecture, and corresponding data structures based upon Firm and Knowledge Management & Innovation Department goals, business and client needs, and relevant technology trends
  • Assess data quality and define processing rules for cleansing, aggregating, and enhancing data to support analysis and predictive modeling
  • Understand and document data lineage for core data elements used in client, lawyer or business analytics
  • Design and drive the implementation of solution architectures that meet business requirements, align with future trends, and address current technology standards to enhance solution agility and the delivery speed of data solutions
  • Effectively plan and communicate future data structures and architectures (including semantic and analytical orientations of data)
  • Undertake, engage and oversee engineering efforts to ingest, transform and structure data for consistency, performance and insight
  • Collaborate with others in the Knowledge Management & Innovation Department to stay aware of business needs related to data management, business intelligence, data science and client experience
  • Partner closely with other Data Analytics resources to understand how data will be used, modeled and deployed
  • Understand the information lifecycle, core consumers of data, and the experience that lawyers, clients, or business professionals have during the use of downstream solutions
  • Partner closely with IT, Finance, HR and Marketing in cataloging data sources, understanding key business metrics and designing future solutions
  • Provide perspective and guidance regarding build vs. buy decisions
  • Participate in the development and implementation of firm-wide data visualization and reporting standards
  • Provide input, perspective, and guidance on data governance and information management strategy
  • Work closely with other Knowledge Management & Innovation professionals to inform application selection, intranet and extranet design, information retrieval and solution functionality based upon trends and patterns in data, taxonomies and reference data, and the business needs of the specific effort
  • Handle other projects under the direction of the CKIO, Director of Data Analytics and other executive staff

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of overall experience; at least 2 years in a hands-on data management or information architect role
  • Experience working with or within a data science program a plus
  • Experience in the legal field is a significant plus
  • Ability to translate business problems into technical requirements
  • Experience leading complex data and/or architecture strategies
  • Experience developing and managing taxonomies and reference data
  • Proficient with SQL and SQL Server Management Studio
  • Experience with data warehousing techniques and/or data lake/zones
  • Experience with ETL solutions a plus (e.g. Intapp, Talend, Pentaho)
  • Proactively develops and maintains technical knowledge in technologies such as noSQL and Graph databases and their respective benefits to data management and advanced analytics
  • Competency with enterprise data visualization platforms a plus (e.g. MS Power BI, Tableau)
  • Familiar with statistical programming languages such as Python, R or Julia
  • Familiarity with experience management systems (e.g. Foundation Software) and enterprise search (e.g. iManage Insight) a plus
  • Experience with complex software implementations including design, configuration, integration, rollout, support and training
  • Exposure and experience working in an agile product management and software development environment, with Scrum certification a plus
  • Experience working with offshore partners and resources

Required Education

  • Associate's degree required, preferably in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering or finance

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics or engineering highly preferred
