Description/Job Summary

Simpson Thacher is an international law firm with over 1,000 lawyers. The Firm has an abiding commitment to public service and pro bono work is engrained in its professional ethos. The Pro Bono Specialist works closely with the Pro Bono team to support the administration of the Pro Bono Program. The Pro Bono Specialist is responsible for oversight, management and logistical support of the Firm’s wide ranging and varied clinical program. This role also provides support to the Pro Bono Counsel and Deputy Pro Bono Counsel regarding information management, reports and presentations. 

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Plan, staff and oversee pro bono “clinics” (short term legal advice consultations) in all offices (travel not required, most clinics are virtual)
  • Manage various ongoing pro bono projects
  • Maintain and distribute CLE, training and resource materials
  • Manage and update the pro bono practice page of the Firm’s intranet
  • Conduct statistical analysis of pro bono work as necessary
  • Assist in responding to pro bono surveys and reports requested by various media outlets, bar associations and referral agencies
  • Serve as point person for lateral attorneys to introduce them to the Pro Bono Program
  • Liaise with pro bono coordinators/teams at legal services organizations for planning and monitoring of project implementation and matters
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Pro Bono Counsel in managing the Firm’s annual Pro Bono Recognition event
  • Plan and execute pro bono events and legal training programs
  • Prepare responses to auditors for pro bono matters
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Fluency in oral and written English, second language proficiency a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills and a strong aptitude for detail
  • Ability to coordinate and work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated interest in public service and serving low-income communities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Zoom and PowerPoint
  • Ability to be flexible and to work independently, at times with minimal supervision, as well as in a fast-paced environment with a small staff
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of people including senior professionals and low-income clients
  • Excellent judgment, including sensitivity to confidential information

Required Experience

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience required, prior experience working in a law firm, or in pro bono, legal aid and/or public interest law preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree required
